A kitchen renovation is a BIG project. It takes months of planning and dreaming and of course, construction. I wanted to spend some time sharing with you the process of a kitchen renovation.
First let me start by saying, I wholeheartedly believe [and studies show] that your surroundings directly effect your overall well being. In other words, if your kitchen is ugly or dysfunctional, you're probably not as stoked to cook dinner every night. We all work so hard at our 9-5s and our homes should be a reflection of our style. Might I also add that your home is your largest financial investment and therefore, I believe it should be treated that way.
OK, let's get this show on the road! So how do you start a kitchen renovation? We love systems and processes so we are breaking it down!
STEP ONE: Gather Information
Think about your lifestyle and everyone who lives in your home. Do you entertain? Do you drink coffee? Do you like to bake? Are you a master chef? How "clean" are you? Can you maintain more delicate materials? What drives you insane about your current kitchen? All these questions can help determine how much counter space, storage and which appliances would be best for you. Our goal is not just a "pretty" kitchen, we want FUNCTION.
STEP TWO: Determine Your Investment
Everyone has a budget whether fixed or flexible. Every kitchen is unique and will have a variable investment. Often times step one can help guide the budget. The cost of your appliance package, cabinetry and custom features will impact your investment dramatically. Decide on some non-negotiables and work your investment from there.
STEP THREE: Create a Floor Plan
Now that we know which elements you want in your kitchen we can measure and create a floor plan. We want to take an extensive measure and take into consideration the surrounding spaces.
STEP 4: Design
This is definitely the fun part of my job! At this point in the project I have inspiration photos from our client and I get to bring all my creativity and expertise to create a concept. It's time to work up a rough cabinet design and select materials for presentation. This is all preliminary. We definitely make adjustments during this phase to make sure we are within budget and meeting all of our clients' expectations.
STEP FIVE: Ordering
Once we have confirmed our concept it's time to begin ordering product. We want to secure all materials prior to construction so our contractors can move through the project in a timely manner. There is still a chance of bumps in the road as with any construction project, but we want to eliminate as many possible. We understand construction is uncomfortable so we handle as many details before #demoday
STEP SIX: Construction
At this point we pass over all construction docs to the contractor and they take the lead. We do regular site checks to make sure things are moving in the right direction, but we trust our trades and let them do what they do best!
STEP SEVEN: Styling
Ok, I guess there are 2 super fun parts to every project. A kitchen is not complete until it's been styled. We love to layer cutting boards, add cookbooks, pick tea towels and fresh herbs to really bring the space to completion. We of course do some "extra" styling for our photo shoots.
